Sunlight is actually made up of <\/span><\/i><b><i>seven different colors<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet\u2014just like the colors of a rainbow we see in the sky after it rains. Each of these colors has its own <\/span><\/i><b><i>unique wavelength and frequency<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Violet has the shortest wavelength, therefore its has the highest energy in the visible spectrum, while red has the longest wavelength and the lowest energy. Surrounding our Earth is a thick, colorless, and transparent layer of air called the <\/span><\/i><b><i>atmosphere<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This atmosphere contains many dust particles, water vapor, and gas molecules like nitrogen and oxygen. But when sunlight passes through the atmosphere, it gets \u201cscattered\u201d by dust particles and gas molecules. Dust and water particles are larger than the wavelength of light, so light reflects off them without changing color.\u00a0 However, with smaller gas molecules, when sunlight shines on them, colors with longer wavelengths, like red and orange, are less scattered and reach the ground more directly, while shorter-wavelength colors, like blue and violet, are scattered more, filling the sky. This is known as <\/span><\/i><b><i>Rayleigh scattering<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, discovered by the British scientist Lord Rayleigh. So, when we look up, the sky appears a soothing blue. Have you noticed that the sky looks paler near the horizon? But if we could fly into space or stand on the Moon, the Sun would appear pure white.
