Lightning and thunder both come from thunderstorms. When clouds build up electric charge, they release a lightning bolt \u2013 like a giant electric spark in the sky. This lightning bolt is <\/span><\/i>hotter than the surface of the sun<\/i><\/b>, and it makes the air around it <\/span><\/i>expand super fast<\/i><\/b>, causing a loud explosion \u2013 that\u2019s thunder!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The reason we <\/span><\/i>see lightning before hearing thunder<\/i><\/b> is because <\/span><\/i>light travels much faster than sound<\/i><\/b>.Light from the lightning reaches your eyes <\/span><\/i>almost instantly<\/i><\/b> (at 300,000 km per second!), while the sound of thunder only travels about 343 meters per second through air. So if the lightning is far away, the sound takes a few seconds to reach you!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Want to know how far the lightning is? When you see lightning, start counting: \u201cone\u2026 two\u2026 three\u2026\u201d until you hear the thunder. <\/span><\/i>Every 3 seconds = about 1 kilometer<\/i><\/b>!So if you count 6 seconds between the lightning and thunder, the lightning is about <\/span><\/i>2 kilometers away<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
