\n<\/b>A long time ago, before modern clocks existed, people used sundials to tell the time. They would stick a pole into the ground and watch how the shadow moved as time passed. Since the sun moves from east to west, the shadow would shift from west to east. This movement is what we now call the <\/span>clockwise direction<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first mechanical clocks were made in Europe. Since Europeans lived in the Northern Hemisphere, they were familiar with the way the sun and its shadow moved from left to right on a sundial. So clockmakers continued to design the hands to move in the same familiar direction.
